More than one torch was created for the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games relay. At least four types of torches were produced, as the original prototype proved defective due to its design and the use of an incorrect fuel mix. The torch seen here is categorised as type 4, according to the International Olympic Committee.

This torch features a silver ring on top, with repeated dove motifs. The dove pictogram was one of 19 designed to communicate the programme of the Mexico 1968 Cultural Olympiad, which occurred in parallel with the Games. ‘La Paloma de la Paz’ (‘the dove of peace’) is the most distinguished of these pictograms and, thus, was used for the XIX Olympiad torch.
