The beaver is one of Canada’s iconic animals and the emblem of the cities of Montreal and Kingston. It has played an important role in the country’s economy. Beaver pelts were the main trade item from the 1600s until they were hunted to near extinction in the mid-1800s. Therefore, it was not a surprise that it was selected as the mascot for the Montreal 1976 Summer Olympics.

Its name was decided after a public competition. ‘Amik’ is the word for beaver in the Algonquin language, the most common idiom amongst the indigenous people of Canada.
