Syrian artist Leila Nseir was a pioneer of the modern still life movement in the Arab world.
Produced in the 1960s, Still Life is an abstract depiction of Syrian craftsmanship, emphasising the country’s rich heritage in the production of pottery, ceramics and blown glass. This artwork embodies an experimental side of Nseir’s oeuvre, showcasing a multilayered approach that pays homage to her country’s cultural identity. Within its geometric lines and dreamlike palette of blues and purples lies a collection of vessels such as jugs, bowls and the top of a vase in the lower left corner. The chosen colour palette may also be reflective of her upbringing in the coastal city of Lattakia, where she spent most of her life.
Through her own visual language, Nseir created a modern landscape of Syrian cultural heritage – this is further implied by the scale and orientation of the painting. As a whole, it is a contemplative piece that conveys a sense of serenity and delicacy.
