Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art
Kamal Boullata was a Palestinian artist, writer and art historian who published significant writings on the evolution of Palestinian art. Thawra/Tharwa demonstrates the artist’s distinctive Kufic style of incorporating Arabic script in his colourful calligraphic compositions. Themes relating to exile, Palestinian identity and traditional embroidery influenced Boullata’s artistic practice. His upbringing in the city of Jerusalem, particularly the decorative elements of its iconic landmark, the Dome of the Rock, is another layer of inspiration.
