Modelled after a dachshund that the President of the Organising Committee gave to the President of the International Sports Press Association, ‘Waldi’ was the mascot of the Munich 1972 Olympics, the first official mascot in the history of the Olympic Summer Games.

Dachshunds are very popular in Bavaria, and Waldi represented the qualities of endurance, tenacity and agility. The Olympic marathon route in Munich was inspired by the outline of the mascot’s shape.
