‘Coal’ was one of the three mascots of the 2002 Winter Olympics that took place in Salt Lake City, Utah. The inspiration for the Games mascots came from Native American legends.
An American black bear, ‘Coal’ was named after a natural resource that has long been important to Utah's economy and development. He loved hockey and curling, and with his strength and durability he represented the last element of the Olympic motto ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’. He was also the protector of his smaller mascot friends and their natural environment.
‘Coal’ wears an amulet featuring a bear in the form of a rock engraving, inspired by the style of the indigenous people of the region.
