In 2022, Qatar became the first Middle Eastern country to host the FIFA World Cup. It was also only the second Cup held in Asia after the Korea/Japan 2002 tournament.
The bidding process started in March 2009 and five contestants reached the final stage. On 2 October 2010, at their headquarters in Zurich, FIFA announced that Qatar had won the bid to host FIFA World Cup 2022.
