Cassius Clay, who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali, had skill and confidence that took him to the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where he won a gold medal in the Heavyweight category.
His bravado and commitment to his beliefs established Clay as one of American sport’s most controversial figures, and his talent cemented him as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
This glove shows 18-year-old Clay’s tenacity as he sits on the edge of superstardom. On a leather glove, he writes:
‘I am the 1959 National A.A.U. Champion (LIGHT) (HEAVYWEIGHT).
